Dragon Dice

I think I’ve mentioned that I’m a big Magic the Gathering fan! One of the best things about crochet, in my opinion anyway, is that you get to merge passions. For quite a while I had wanted to make a dice bag so that I could have something I made to hold my magic swag – dice, counters, etc. Dragon’s are a big part of Magic’s lore, so when looking for patters for a dice bag, I was drawn to a Dragon Egg pattern.

The bag project started back in late October or early November. I didn’t start out with the intention of making a dragon egg, but of a dice bag. Naturally I went to Ravelery to see what my options were. After a little bit of searching I came across a free pattern by Cindy de Vries. I was drawn to this patter for several reasons. I mentioned above that dragons are a big part of Magic’s lore, so a dragon egg pattern was thematic to what I wanted to do. I find her pattern to be very ascetically pleasing, while remaining functional to the identity of a dice bag. The project also required me to use a crocodile stitch, which was new to me. For new readers to our blog, Brian and I try to prioritize projects that teach us new skills.

This project was started as gift for Kristen for her birthday. I made my first bag completely out of  green yarn – the same that is at the bottom of the dice bag featured in the pictures below. The bag was fun to make, looked good, and only took me a few hours to complete. At this point in my life I was also working on items to donate for our Hooking for Hope project. It dawned on me that since I was having fun, and the project didn’t take an immense amount of time, this was a good candidate to make multiples of.

When all was said and done I made 10 bags for our fund raiser. The one you see featured above is the final bag I made, and one the one that ended up being the gift for Kristen for her birthday. You may notice that the bag does look a bit like a dragon’s egg when closed, and has a drawstring that can get it to close fairly easily. You may also notice that in descending order the colors are white, blue, black, red and green. For any Magic players reading the blog, you will immediately notice that those are the colors of Magic in order.

If Kristen weren’t also a magic player, this probably would not have been the one I gifted to her. As she is, she was quite happy with the gift. I also kept one for myself, but in a solid green.
